TDS deducted? You may still have tax to pay.

Understand the difference between tax already deducted and your final liability.

Educational guide · Updated 19 September 2026 · FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27

The quick answer

TDS is a tax credit, not your final tax calculation. A refund may arise if verified tax credits exceed your final liability; a shortfall may mean additional tax is payable.

Check the credit first

Match your TDS certificates with Form 26AS. AIS includes broader reported financial information; from AY 2023–24, Form 26AS primarily shows TDS and TCS information.

When the numbers do not match

Check the year, PAN and deductor details. Contact the deductor for corrections where needed and use the official tax-credit mismatch service. Avoid treating an unverified credit as an assured refund.
