Cash limits depend on the transaction.

Cash held at home, cash receipts and cash loans are different questions.

Educational guide · Updated 19 September 2026 · FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27

The quick answer

There is no single “personal cash limit” that answers every situation. The rules distinguish receipts, loans, repayments, business expenses and withdrawals.

A key receipt restriction for FY 2025–26

Section 269ST generally restricts cash receipts of ₹2 lakh or more: from a person in a day, for a single transaction, or for transactions relating to one event or occasion from a person. Exceptions and other provisions can apply.

Before making a cash transaction

  • Identify whether it is a receipt, loan, repayment or expense.
  • Check linked instalments and transactions; splitting receipts may not avoid a restriction.
  • Keep a clear source-of-funds record and ask about the exact scenario.
